Ritual Containers for Dry Food

Joseon Dynasty

National Palace Museum of Korea

National Palace Museum of Korea
Seoul, South Korea

This ritual vessel was made of fine-cut bamboo for dry food. With a base diameter larger than the mouth of the vessel, this bamboo vessel’s shape resembles another slim-waist wooden vessel, Du. In each spirit chamber of the Ancestral Shrine, twelve bamboo vessels, two lines in length and six lines in width, were set on the east side of the ritual table. Although the illustrations in the Royal Protocol of the Royal Ancestral Shrine depict the lids of the vessels being used, these surviving ritual vessels have no lid with them.
