The vernacular edition of the Sūtra of the Buddha’s Teachings on the Profound Grace of Parents (hereafter Teachings of the Profound Grace) is a Buddhist text published in 1796. The translation in vernacular was prepared in order to allow access to Buddhist scriptures also to those among the general public who could not read and understand the text in Hanmun. The Jangseogak edition of Teachings of the Profound Grace was printed in 1796 at Yongjusa (龍珠寺) Temple, in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, and it differs from all other editions in that its contents are organized into three sections: the “Preface,” “Main Teachings” and “Dissemination.” Teachings of the Profound Grace is one of the most frequently published Buddhist texts of the Joseon period.A comparison of all editions provides invaluable data on linguistic variations in lexicon and orthography, and this makes the Teachings of the Profound Grace a highly valuable document for research in Korean Language history.
