Sapgeumdae, an official’s belt with gilt ornaments, is a type of gakdae, a rank-signifying belt worn with official uniforms. The materials used for the belt ornaments were determined according to the wearer’s rank; seodae, or the buffalo horn-decorated belt, was worn by first-rank government officials; sapgeumdae, or the patterned gold-decorated belt, by senior second-rank officials; sogeumdae, or the plain gold-decorated belt, by junior second-rank officials; sapeundae, or the patterned silver-decorated belt, by senior third-rank officials; soeundae, or the plain silver-decorated belt, by junior third- and fourth-rank officials; and heukgakdae, or the black horn-decorated belt, by fifth- to ninth-rank officials. It was worn by Hwang Cheol (黃鐵, 1864-1930).
