These are yeot (Korean hard taffy) scissors made of iron, which were used by yeot sellers to cut the taffy or making a loud clanging noises to attract the attention of passersby. They are also used to hammer the yeot knife to cut the hard taffy. Similar to ordinary scissors, this type of scissors are generally made by crossing two metal plates in an X shape and fixing the intersecting point with a bolt. Yeot scissors have flat and wide blades with no sharp edges, and therefore cannot be used to cut objects like ordinary scissors. Also, the handles of these scissors are not designed to fit into the user’s fingers, but instead are much larger and oval-shaped to provide plenty of space when holding them.
