Red-lacquered Sewing Box of the Consort of Imperial Prince Yeong

Early 20th century

National Palace Museum of Korea

National Palace Museum of Korea
Seoul, South Korea

This sewing box consists of three stackable lacquered boxes and a lid. The incised and black-lacquered rim runs around the body of the box and lid which displays a typical Japanese style. The top box is divided into three compartments and the remaining two are not. The stackable three boxes are placed on a base with a handle for transportion. Two solid branches of arabesque design are sculpted in three-dimensional forms and attached to the sides of both handles while each box is luxuriously decorated with black on red lacquer, creating an impressive outline.
