Umbrella

This is a tool used for protection from rain or sunlight, and was designed to be foldable. Radial ribs are attached to the tip of the pole, and the paper is applied on the outer surface of the ribs to cover all of the ribs. Stretchers are attached to support the inner side of the ribs, and a cylindrical runner where the stretchers meet at the center are held at the top spring while the umbrella is unfolded. Oiled paper was used to render the umbrella water-resistant. The user would unfold and hold it up in one hand to cover their head, and fold and roll it up when in disuse. The umbrella shown here is made of bamboo and paper, and has ten ribs in total. The ribs are fixed by thread at regular intervals, and a string loop is attached to the tip for the umbrella to be hung. The surface of the paper is adorned with five purple butterfly motifs, and additional paper is attached over the end of the ribs for reinforcement.
