Although Chinese women did not wear waist belts fitted with numerous hanging accessories, they often attached one or two small bags to the buttons of their lapels. Purses such as these typically contained scented cotton and manicure tools. Produced in great quantities by small cottage industries and commercial studios, purses were favorite gifts exchanged by the Chinese and Manchus.
