This is a wicker tray made by weaving wicker or bamboo skins. It is generally used to drain oil and cool a spread of various fried foods such as jeon made from mung-bean and other ingredients, or to drain boiled noodles. Its other uses included sun-drying various herbs or vegetables, draining water from washed ingredients, or sifting liquor. It is made mostly of wicker, as the name indicates. However, in regions with abundant bamboo trees, bamboo skin was used instead of wicker to make the tray. A wicker tray generally has a wide, round shape with a short, raised rim. A wicker tray is also used in ceremonial rites to offer a meal on this tray or a small dining table as tribute to the spirit of death who had come to a funeral to take the deceased, and it was placed by the wall until the coffin was borne out.
