Chorip is a hat worn by men of the Joseon Dynasty, and woven with grass or bamboo strips. It was worn regardless of the wearer’s status, although the number of strips woven in the hat differed based on status: 50 strips were used for the literati and 30 for commoners. In the late Joseon Dynasty, it began to be worn as an official hat by commoners, while the word “choripdong,” meaning a boy wearing a chorip, came into widespread use as the hat was worn by boys of literati families. A special director at a local advisory bureau wore an orange chorip with decorations of tiger whiskers along with a red robe as mourning attire.
