18th century

National Palace Museum of Korea

National Palace Museum of Korea
Seoul, South Korea

The overall surface of this bottle is lacquered in yellow and painted with a pink climbing rose. This relic is one of the burial items recovered from the grave where Princess Hwayu (10th daughter of King Yeongjo, 1740-1777) and her husband Hwang In-jeom (Unknown-1802) were interred together. More than 30 relics that the royal pair would have used in their lifetime including stationery, accessories, and pottery were discovered in the grave. Some are considered to be items that Hwang had brought from Qing dynasty China where he visited a number of times.
