The exhibition of works by the outstanding Norwegian expressionist Edvard Munch (1863–1944) for the first time will present the master's legacy in Russia in such a full extent. The works of Munch, striking the strength of emotions and the innovation of artistic language, have long been recognized worldwide, but, unfortunately, little is known to Russian viewers. The exhibition will include about 70 paintings and 30 graphic works, photographs and memorial objects mainly from the Munch Museum in Oslo, as well as from the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts. A.S. Pushkin. The most famous viewer and the expected exhibit at the exhibition will be the famous "Scream", one of the versions of which is stored in the Munch Museum.Interestingly, the formation of the worldview and imaginative thinking of the Norwegian genius was greatly influenced by the novels of F.M. Dostoevsky. The theme "Munch and Dostoevsky" will be the content of one of the sections of the exhibition. The exhibition of Edvard Munch will continue in the Tretyakov Gallery a series of shows of European artists whose work influenced Russian culture, served as a guide for domestic artists: “Whistler and Russia” (2006), “Pete Mondrian. The path to abstraction "(2013)," Giorgio de Chirico "(2017) and others. Such projects allow you to see new contextual comparisons of European and Russian art.
