4 October 2019 marks the 350th anniversary of the death of Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669).



To mark the Year of Rembrandt the Hermitage has selected the picture The Fall of Haman (Haman Learns his Fate), known since the middle of the eighteenth century. Recent conservation, which involved the removal of thick layers of yellowed varnish and retouchings, has more clearly revealed certain aspects of the artist’s technique, rich in fine nuances of colour and expressive textured brushstrokes. This exhibition presents an opportunity to consider the unique composition within the contexts of the great Dutch artist’s work overall and of his interest in the Biblical East.
