The Four Reincarnated Masters of Mongolian and Tibetan Buddhism
Nov 28, 2020 - Mar 1, 2021
During the Qing dynasty, the policy of supporting the Gelugpa School was adopted by the imperial court in order to consolidate the rule of Mongolia and Tibet. By bestowing official titles to the four Great Reincarnated Buddhist Masters - Dalai Lama, Panchen Erdeni, Changkya Khutukhtu, and Jebtsundamba Khutuktu, the Qing government was in effect making them responsible for the affairs of Gelugpa School in Tibet, Inner and Outer Mongolia, etc. The artifacts featured in this special exhibition include archival materials and antiquities from the Museum’s collections, as well as selected objects from Mongolia’s Bogda Khaan Palace Museum and the Mongolian and Tibetan Cultural Center of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. Most of the exhibits on loan, totaling 150, were rarely presented in expositions, and some are even shown to the public for the first time. The exhibition offers a complete and systematic survey of the four Great Reincarnated Buddhist Masters of Mongolia and Tibet during the Qing dynasty, and is intended to help the viewers understand the histories of these four Buddhist Masters. The visitors will see the implements belonging to Jebtsundamba Khutuktu from the Bogda Khaan Palace Museum and those of the seventh Changkya Khutukhtu from the Mongolian and Tibetan Cultural Center. The Museum is pleased to have the opportunity to promote cultural exchanges among the different institutions holding Tibetan and Mongolian cultural collections, and to expand the academic research in all related fields.
