The Kunstgewerbemuseum and the Kunstbibliothek, together with the Saxony-Anhalt Arts Foundation and the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle are taking a new look at the life and work of Erich Dieckmann (1896–1944), carpenter, furniture designer and influential teacher of the Bauhaus in Dessau and Weimar.
While Marcel Breuer went on to become an international design icon, Dieckmann is known only to a select few. Alongside a broad spectrum of Dieckmann’s work, characterised by his modular designs in wood, piping and steel, this exhibition also gathers together a series of pieces by his contemporaries, such as Lilly Reich and Eckart Muthesius. The historical panorama is complemented by contemporary contributions from Burg Giebichenstein students and an artist duo, who bring Dieckmann’s designs into the 21st century.
