Vigilius Eriksen (1722–1782): Portrait Painter to the Russian Empress
May 18, 2022 - Sep 4, 2022
The year 2022 celebrates 300 years since the birth of the Danish artist Vigilius Eriksen (1722–1782), who was for a long time active in Russia, gaining fame for his portraits of Empress Catherine the Great.

The State Hermitage Museum’s plan is to mark this occasion with a monographic exhibition devoted to the artist. This exhibition project displays not only the widely celebrated works by this master, but also a group of oil portraits and miniatures from Russian and Danish museums which are not known so well to experts and the public at large. Since Eriksen’s oeuvre is still being explored and some of his works have been attributed to him but lately, the exhibition is to show the results of the technical and technological studies of his reference works along with comparative materials.
