Bangarra Dance Theatre

Inspired by 40,000 years of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, Bangarra’s startling contemporary choreography speaks across cultures.

For more than 25 years, Bangarra Dance Theatre has entranced audiences around the world, fusing ancient and modern influences into a uniquely fluid and inventive dance theatre that exemplifies the vibrancy of one of the world’s oldest continuous cultures.

Nunukal man Stephen Page has been the company’s award-winning artistic director since 1991. Connecting land, lore and ceremony with contemporary art, Page has developed Bangarra’s authentic aesthetic – from his breakthrough 1991 Ochres, with Bernadette Walong-Sene and Djakapurra Munyarryun, to 2016’s Our Land People Stories, including his tribute to contemporary visual artist Nyapanyapa Yunupingu.

Acclaimed by audiences and critics across the country and the world, the 16-member Bangarra Dance Theatre is one of the Opera House’s seven flagship resident companies. Each Bangarra artist has a proud Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage; each is also part of a company that continues to redefine the possibilities of Australian dance, culture and storytelling in the 21st century.
