The notion of journey
This exhibition draws inspiration from a 2005 collection of Claudio Magris' writings, in which the notion of journeying branches out and expands beyond mere reality, fluctuating between the internal and external self, in a constant exercise of research and surpassing individual roots as a collective. The Galleria Nazionale's 20th-century collections showcase a selection of foreign-born artists who were based in Italy from the 1950s and 60s onward.

It focuses particularly on the large Sino-Japanese group that was linked predominantly to Michel Tapiè's forays in Turin, and the great Roman exhibition at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in 1965.

Eastern artists flocked to the exhibition, displaying their unique ability to synthesize the recent and tragic atomic bombings that had turned their world upside down with the abstract and informal expressionism borrowed from the West.

It is important to note, in this context, Rome's particular energy and internationalism in those years, characterized by the politics of important exhibitions and acquisitions. Palma Bucarelli also contributed to this, working with the city's most famous galleries, including the Rome-New York Art Foundation, L’Obelisco, La Salita, La Tartaruga, and L’Attico.

The group of Asian artists includes some who moved to Rome after 1970, such as Shu Takahashi from Japan, Lim Hooi Hwa from Taiwan, and others who established a relationship with the Galleria Nazionale during the major exhibition of 1990–91, which was dedicated to the Gutai group.
