Nocturnes

20 Years of the Curatorship Study Group

REGINA TEIXEIRA DE BARROS

In the short story “A causa secreta” [The Secret Cause], the character Fortunato Gomes da Silveira, described by Machado de Assis as "a capitalista being,” is shown as a big-hearted man, capable of noble yet selfless attitudes. One day he saved na armory employee who had been assaulted by a group of foot-fighters known as “capoeiras” and was seriously wounded with a dagger. He accompanied the man's slow recovery and then withdrew himself from the scene. Silveira, Who habitually visited the sick at the Santa Casa [Mercy Hospital], ended up founding a health clinic together with his friend Garcia, a physician.

Fim do primeiro tempo (1973/1974) by Dudi Maia RosaMuseu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo - MAM São Paulo

"Once the clinic was Open to the public, he himself became the administrator and head of the nursing staff. He examined everything, I organized everything - from purchases to food, medicine to billing." He proved to naive nursing skills and uncommon dedication to the sick.
Nothing ever caused him to flinch; no disease was too anguishing or repugnant. He was always ready for anything, at any hour of the day or night. He was admired and acclaimed by all."
But the human heart, as Garcia observed, is “a constant source of mystery." As the tale goes on, Garcia, like the reader, begins to realize that Fortunato Silveira is, in fact, a ravening sadist. When faced with other people's suffering he feels neither anger nor hate; merely a vast gratification, still and profound, such as others might feel upon hearing a beautiful sonata or seeing a divine sculpture, something akin to a pure aesthetic sensation."

This story illustrates that which Carl Gustav Jung called "shadow". Shadow, in analytical psychology, is a place Where we keep our negative characteristics those with which we are unable to deal directly. They are aspects not readily accessible to our consciousness - aspects that common sense tells us are unpleasant, annoying, unsuitable, or threatening. Such negative aspects are present in individuals as well as in the collectivity. When brought up to consciousness level, such aspects destabilize our certainties and can give place to great transformations.

Dora com unhas azuis (1996/1997) by Marcelo ArrudaMuseu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo - MAM São Paulo

Revealing the obscure side of human nature has been one of the aims of XX Century art and literature. Nocturnes brings together a small exhibition of Works from the MAM-SP collection, the selection of Which was based on reflections of Jung's concept of shadow. The works presented feature certain elements that cause unease, be it because they bring to mind each individual's personal shadow, or because they deal With shadowy aspects that have to do with the collection.

Sem título (da série Vermelho) (1996/1997) by Rosangela RennóMuseu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo - MAM São Paulo

The exhibition was divided to form modules containing works that deal with correlated issues.
“Vias de acesso" [Ways of access] is the first module of the exhibition that, as in a prologue, heralds what is to come. Admission to the world of shadows is gained by means of a plunge, vertigo, terror, and contact with plutonian forces. Then come the symbolic manifestations linked to indiscriminate archaic content. These manifestations include beasts, monsters, and perfidious and pestilent animals.

Sem título (da série Topologias (1998/1999) by Carlos UchôaMuseu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo - MAM São Paulo

The module “Expressões plásticas” [Plastic expressions] features works of different techniques that deal with the question of light and shadow within the visual arts realm. Here we have shadow as the outline of a figure interposed between a source of light and a surface. Set up according to similar criteria, the module “Saturação” [Saturation] consists of works entirely in tones of black or containing a central image that is a figure in black.

Grand noturno (1984/1985) by Anna Bella GeigerMuseu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo - MAM São Paulo

“Metrópole” [Metropolis] features a city's underground aspects, with photos in black and white where dark stairwells and gutters indicate the descent into the nether regions and passersby walk toward a darkness that reveal no hint as to their destination.
Shadow, in the collectivity, appears in the form of varied cross sections. ln religion, as the “good vs. Evil” antithesis. In society as madness. In the militaryregime, as part of the shadow of our country's history.

Sem título (1997/1998) by Edith DerdykMuseu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo - MAM São Paulo

"Interiores" [lnteriors] shows that what is part of us, individually or collectively, but allows us no access to the light of day: the interior of a Slaughter-house; the image in a photographic negative; the “back of the neck” - that which is part of us but is only seen by others.

Untitled (1997) by Nazareth PachecoMuseu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo - MAM São Paulo

Aggressiveness and sensuality, hostility and lechery - as well as pettiness, envy resentment, greed - are somber characteristics of the personality with Which we come up against in the course of life and that make up the eternal contest between the occult and that Which is manifest.

Corte (1980/1981) by Bené FontelesMuseu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo - MAM São Paulo

The final module of Nocturnes includes the viewer as an element of the exhibition: "Você faz parte” [You belong].
