Dayanita Singh: Go Away Closer

Hayward Gallery

8 October – 15 December 2013, Hayward Gallery

Dayanita Singh: Go Away Closer was the first major UK retrospective of this artist’s work.

The exhibition featured her ‘portable museums’, a major body of work that developed from her experiments in book-making, and which take the form of large wooden structures that hold 70 to 140 photographs that can be placed and opened in various configurations.

It also brought together her early works and artists’ books.

For Singh, the paradoxical title 'Go Away Closer' expresses the condition of photography: in trying to capture and hold onto something – a moment, an event – we only succeed in pushing it further away.
