This major Surrealist show, curated by Dawn Ades, documented the extraordinary cross-currents of Paris in the late 1920s through painting, film, sculpture, music, photography, masks and ritual objects.

It was the first major survey of Documents, the radical surrealist magazine published in France in 1929 and 1930 and edited by avant-garde philosopher and novelist Georges Bataille.

The origins of this exhibition can be traced back to the 1978 Hayward Gallery exhibition Dada and Surrealism Reviewed, which Dawn Ades worked on as the youngest members of an illustrious exhibition committee that also included David Sylvester and Roland Penrose.

The exhibition featured a reading room with issues of Bataille's Documents.
