The magazine "Understanding Gardening", launched in the early 1960s and set new design standards using colour illustrations rather than photographs. Each weekly issue featured new entries in its pictorial encyclopaedia.

Published by Sampson, Low and Marston & Co Ltd of Great Missenden each issue was illustrated by Linden Artists who specialised in graphic illustration and design work.
