The 41th victory of the Wave
With the victory on August 16, 2017 the Contrada dell’Onda (the Wave) has won the race for the 41st time.

Different episodes characterized the race: the horse assigned to the Contrada della Lupa (the Shewolf) got injured and was therefore excluded from the competition.

The Contrada della Torre (the Tower) and Contrada dell’Oca (the Goose), given their rivalry, both considered it paramount to prevent the other from winning and eventually neither of them could effectively compete for the final victory

Lastly Onda (Wave), Chiocciola (Snail) and Valdimontone were the main protagonists of the race because of the strenght of their horses.

In particular the horse given to the Contrada dell’Onda (its name is Porto Alabe) showed its superiority when it overtook the horse of Chiocciola in the final part of the race preventing the latter from winning the race after 18 years.

The Contrada dell’Onda has been living a particularly positive and lucky moment (three victories in the last six years) and the results are evident: the jockey, his nickname is Brigante, gained his first victory, as he turned out to be the perfect choice for the horse; moreover the “palio”, the silk banner that is the prize for the winner, was dedicated to a Sienese sculptor, Giovanni Duprè, who had been born in the Contrada dell’Onda.

The banner was painted by Sinta Tantra, a British artist famous for her “A Beautiful Sunset Mistaken for a Dawn”, a painting on the Bridge at Canary Wharf, London. After the Palio in August, only the winners are left to celebrate their successes while the other Contrade can only think back to their mistakes and start planning their strategies for 2018.
