Frevo Portraits

Paço do Frevo

Photography has no sound, but here it comes loaded with many chords, memories and senses. Meet the records of photographers who have managed to capture the sensations of some anonymous characters in Frevo's history.

The Photographers
Pierre Edouard Léopold Verger and Mário de Carvalho were two photographers famous for recording the Brazilian popular culture and both found in the northeast of Brazil a new place to call home. After traveling the five continents, Frenchman Pierre Verger settled in Salvador and Mário, a native of Bonito, moved to Recife at the age of sixteen, remaining until the end of the 1940s as a sergeant instructor of physical education of the Military Brigade."The feeling that there was a vast world, wouldn’t  get out of my head and the desire to see it led me to other horizons," Pierre said. Pierre Verger has done a photographic work of great importance, based on the daily life and the popular cultures of the five continents.Self-taught, Mário de Carvalho was invited by the Department of Documentation and Culture of the Municipality of Recife to occupy the position of photographer. His portraits were used by writers and researchers of our culture and are a true historical and sentimental city script of the 40s and 50s.
Independence Square, Recife - Brazil
Popularly known as Frevo's General Headquarters, Independence Square is a space loaded with memory, symbols and meanings for Frevo. There, the popular carnival happened, of the families, of the traditional groups and of the associations.
