Fountain scene in front of a palace

Signed J G Platzer. This painting, like Dancing scene with palace interior, also depicts a scene of bacchanalian inspiration. Here, half naked figures are seen interacting in a fountain in front of a palace. The erotic expression of the figures in a combination with the visual attributes like pearls clearly corresponds with earlier depictions of the myth of Venus. However, as the painting is made as a twin to Dancing scene with palace interior, it is possible that this motif, like the other, derives from the Odyssey.
