The 12th edition of the Scottish Cup final was contested by two West Dunbartonshire teams, with Renton beating Vale of Leven 3-1 in a replay. Renton would go on to lift the cup again, three years later in 1888, and go on to be crowned ‘unofficial’ Champions of the World when they beat that season’s English FA Cup winners, West Bromwich Albion.
