1959 Volkswagen Beetle

Front and left hand side view. The Volkswagen Beetle – or, as it is affectionately known by many, the ‘Bug’ – was the highest selling car model of all time until the late 1990s, when it was surpassed by the Toyota Corolla.
German car manufacturer Volkswagen was established in 1937 and aimed to produce a ‘People’s Car’, an automobile that was affordable for all people. The result was the design of the Beetle. It is rumoured that the Beetle was inspired by Nazi Germany leader Adolf Hitler’s vision of a cheap mass produced car, suitable for a family of five.
Most Beetles sold in Australia were imported from Germany in parts and assembled locally. In more recent years the popularity of the iconic ‘Bug’ in Australia has greatly declined. In 2016 Volkswagen announced plans to phase out Beetle sales in the country.
