Aloof and unmoved, Fredegonda sits by the deathbed of the man who was stabbed on her orders in a church. She casually plays with her long braid that almost touches the ground, quietly waiting for her adversary to die. The painting was so well received at the Winter Salon in Brussels that Tadema decided to move to the city.
