In 1892 Prussia introduced express trains with side corridors and protected passageways running from coach to coach. The first "D-trains" with such walkways travelled between Berlin and Cologne. Now kitchen or dining cars could also be added to the train, which eliminated the need for making long the stops in stations. In 1904, the coach factory "Gebr. Gastell" in Mombach near Mainz incorporated a dining area with 16 seats into three 1893 kitchen coaches. Our model, a gift from the factory to the Transport and Building Museum in Berlin, also boasts a dining area as well.
