Coedited by Franz Marc and Wassily Kandinsky, The Blaue Reiter Almanac ranks among the most important documents in the history of twentieth-century art. Reacting against the aesthetic conservatism of German society, the almanac attempted to demonstrate the complex origins of avant-garde art, juxtaposing the work of progressive artists with international examples of folk, tribal, and ancient art. Despite successful sales, plans for a second volume were dropped after the outbreak of World War I.
