"American Gothic", 1930, by Grant Wood (1891-1942) has become the classic image of upright, American self-reliance. Known as an example of Regionalism, this work is a celebration of the national heartland and the agrarian life. It also captures the austerity of the Depression years.

This stamp was one of the "Four Centuries of American Art" commemorative stamps issued on August 27, 1998, in Santa Clara, California. The pane features twenty American paintings. An inscription on the back of each stamp describes the painting and artist.
