The Post Office Department issued this 3-cent stamp to honor General George S. Patton, Jr., and the Armored Forces of the United States Army, through the Fort Knox, Kentucky, post office on November 11, 1953. The stamp's central design is a portrait of General Patton. On either side of the portrait is shown a Patton tank in action. In the upper left corner appears the wording "US Postage," and in the upper right corner the denomination "3c." Across the bottom of the stamp in a double panel, arranged in two lines, is the wording "Honoring Gen. George S. Patton, Jr., and the Armored Forces of the US Army." All lettering is designed in whiteface Gothic.

The stamp was printed by the rotary process, electric-eye perforated, and issued in panes of fifty stamps each. An initial printing of 110 million stamps was authorized.
