This Echo I Communications for Peace stamp commemorates the world’s first communications satellite, Echo I, which was placed into orbit on August 12, 1960. It was a balloon satellite, a reflector which allowed for signals to bounce off of its surface and return back to Earth. The stamp features an image of radio waves connecting Echo I and the Earth.
