Milein Cosman was introduced to Javanese dance by the celebrated John Coast who, after the fall of Singapore, had been imprisoned in Japanese labour camps and forced to work on the notorious Burma railway. There he came to appreciate the music and dance of the region and after the war he organised European tours for dancers such as the Sie brothers who performed at London's Kensington Theatre, 1946-47
