One of the finest portraits of Rama Varma is of Raja Ravi Varma, his father. Leaning on one side of the sofa, Ravi Varma is pictured with a walking stick in his right hand, a slightly folded left hand, and a turban and coat. Rama Varma inherited his father's artistic talent and worked in oil on canvas and painted portraits.

After completing his matriculation, he decided to study painting at the Sir J.J. School of Arts in Bombay. An exhibition of his works, after his studies there was well acclaimed by all. His painting prowess amazed the rulers and the public alike. He was recognized in many ways as the hallmark and model of the art of the time.
