6c Grandma Moses stamp

One of America's best-known and best-loved artists, Anna Mary Robertson 'Grandma' Moses (1860-1961) began painting in her seventies, after retiring from farm work. A self-taught artist, she produced about 1,600 paintings, including several after her 100th birthday. Her works depict landscapes and rural life's traditional activities, often evoking memories of simpler times while nurturing hope for the future. Born in Greenwich, New York, she and her husband Thomas Moses spent much of their lives in the Shenandoah Valley.
