Buff leather jerkin for a cavalryman with silk sleeves (possibly interlined with linen). The sleeves are made from two pieces of silk, with gold and silver lace applied in stripes over the whole. This is the same woven lace that is used to edge each section of the buff coat, and as binding on the armholes and cuffs. This gilt decoration is typical for the 1630s design. The collar is felted wool. Rest marks by apparent lace holes at front indicate there have been hooks, or hooks and eyes, for fastening at the front, since removed - this is backed up by rust marks on the underside which show clearly the shapes of hooks and eyes. The buff coat is lined in pale pink silk. There are buttons at the collar and the sleeve vents. The coat also has deep vents at the side which would have splayed out as the rider sat on a horse, and the coat is unusually padded on the back as well, possibly for protection.
