Vélazquez took the features of the court jester to King Philip II of Spain, Pablo de Valladolid, and transposed them onto this imaginary portrait of the Greek philosopher Democritus. He is pointing to a globe and is dressed in 17th Century finery. The cynical philosopher is depicted here with a wry smile on his face.
