In San Miguel Chicaj, the cofrade mayor of each cofradía has a spiritual guide called abogado or k’jauxel tiniente. This person is in charge of performing different rituals, such as receiving offerings for the cofradía, blessing those who give them, blessing the musical instruments during the festivities and accompanying the processions, among others. The ceremonial attire of the k’jauxel tiniente is the same as that of the cofrades-white shirt and pants, a red sash and a su’t on the head- however, what distinguishes them is a second su’t worn over the shoulders.
