God the Father presides over the scene from heaven, as Christ on the cross is flanked by the Virgin Mary and St. John the Evangelist. Two angels mourn his death. On each side of the cross, the instruments of His Passion. The scenes on the sides show the Annunciation, the Nativity, the Deposition of Christ's body in the tomb, the Anastasis (representation of Christ's descending into hell) and the Resurrection.
