Sonia Gomes creates abstract sculptures by combining secondhand textiles with everyday materials like furniture, driftwood, and wire, aiming to reclaim Afro-Brazilian traditions and feminized art forms from historical margins. Her sculptures, characterized by a mix of tensile and slack forms, embody a sense of corporeality and dynamism inspired by Brazilian dances, using found fabrics that carry the histories of their previous owners, which she then reinterprets with new significance.
