Front and left hand side view. In the 1950s and 60s American style cars were popular in the Australian market. Car manufacturers discovered that although Australians appreciated American styling, they wanted big cars, not gigantic cars. The Dodge Phoenix offered the best of America.
Introduced in 1960, the Phoenix was produced until 1972. It was the Australian version of the American Dodge Dart and its name was borrowed from the Dodge Dart Phoenix. Imported in CKD packs, the vehicle was assembled by Chrysler Australia at its Mile End factory. The Phoenix offered luxury over performance, but its power was still enough to impress motorists. It was successful in the prestige market and its appearance continues to be widely admired.
In 1972 the Phoenix was replaced by the ‘Chrysler by Chrysler’.
