A student of Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Anshutz continued his studies in Paris with the highly regarded Academic painter Bougereau. Like Eakins, he was also capable of penetrating psychological insight in his portraits. The intensely realized focus on personality in this painting is indicative of his preoccupation with realism, enhanced by the dramatic coloration of the sitter’s dress.
