Invited to direct the Academy of Fine Arts at Mexico City in 1893, Arpa opened a studio at San Antonio, Texas, around 1900 and became an important part of the San Antonio school. Arpa studied at the School of Fine Arts in Seville, Spain, and received acclaim at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. He later returned to Spain. James D. Hamlin Collection
