Charles Darwin's barometer

Created by instrument maker John Frederick Newman (1783 - 1860, British), this portable mountain barometer was used by Charles Darwin (1809 – 1882, British) in his geological work during the voyage of HMS 'Beagle' (1831 – 1836). In 1899, it was presented to the Royal Society by Darwin’s executors, remaining with the Society until this day. Since the 1930s, Darwin’s barometer has been on loan to Down House, Kent (the home of Charles Darwin), as an integral part of his scientific memory and legacy.
