Sitting at his desk, St Augustine is startled by the apparition of St Jerome, who had died shortly before. He informed his friend Augustine that he had been admitted into heaven. Later, in his De Civitate Dei (On the City of God), Augustine stated that souls without sin could take up their place beside God directly after their death, without having to wait until Judgement Day. The coat of arms above the passageway on the right belongs to the Bernardo family from Venice.
