This canvas depicts one of Benet’s preferred themes: the bustle of urban life expressed through a rich celebration of colour. The painting was shown at the exhibition held at Galerías Syra in 1966 where it received the Gold Medal awarded by Barcelona’s art critics. When the Grupo Novell organised an homage to Benet in 1969 in the form of a retrospective survey of his work, this canvas was among the paintings selected, indicating the deservedly high opinion in which it has been held.
Benet depicted similar subjects in other works, including terrace cafés, another subject that lent itself to the use of very varied patches of colour that are simultaneously lively, rigorously organised and harmonious.
