Born in Ohio, Craig traveled up the Missouri River to Fort Benton, Montana Territory in 1865, spending four years with various Indian tribes. He opened a portrait studio in Zanesville, Ohio, then studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. In 1881, on his way to Colorado Springs, Craig became the first trained artist to paint in Taos, New Mexico. He settled in Colorado Springs for the next 50 years taking many trips to southern Colorado where many Texas cowboys worked on ranches. Reaugh-Bugbee Acquisition Fund
