During a summer of painting in New Mexico in 1929, Georgia O’Keeffe became fascinated with the landscape. The vast, contoured panorama of mountains, hills, mesas, and cliffs, eroded by eons of wind and rain, presented complex spatial challenges to resolve on canvas. Dark Mesa with Pink Sky reveals the artist’s editing process and interest in the reduction and simplification of forms, as well as her imaginative palette, which she selected to dramatize the interplay of the natural elements.
