Jamini Prokash Gangooly was one of the foremost exponents of academic realism in Calcutta (now Kolkata). Although an expert at other genres, his excellence was patent in his landscapes. His beach scene at Visakhapatnam, a seaside resort in Andhra Pradesh on the east coast of India, highlights the characteristics of Gangooly’s painterly skills. The artist liked to capture the play of light on the surface of water and his favourite times of capturing were the twilight hours – the melancholy shadows of dusk and the rosy promise of dawn.
