The Crowning of Esther

Fan with carved, pierced and gilt mother of pearl sticks, backed with burgau.

The double leaf is painted on the recto with a coronation scene including figures dressed in traditional attire. The female figure being crowned bears a close resemblance to paintings of Madame de Pompadour (mistress of Louis XV of France) by Van Loo and Liotard. The verso is painted with a female figure in a landscape.

Liotard, J. (1702 – 1789)
A Swiss artist renowned for works in pastel and portraits of several of Europe’s Royal families during the Eighteenth Century. Van Loo, C. (1705 – 1765) French painter named first painter to King Louis XV in 1762.  He is famed for historical, allegorical, and religious and genre painting.
